Narrative

From the database of Keith L. Smith Note:
A number of mysteries and controversies surround Eve and her life and death.
I have not been able to locate any primary sources in Pennsylvania, Virginia, OH, or Indiana to prove any of the reported "facts" about her life.
Eve was supposedly born in Pennsylvania and her father was supposedly John Miller. At various times I have found family historians reporting different ancestors for Eve including that she was the daughter of Johannes Müller/John Miller the son of Martin Müller with whom her husband's father immigrated in 1749. In reviewing the facts that can be verified this is apparently not the case. So all we know about Eve is that she was born either on the date listed in 1762 or the date listed in 1765 probably in Berks Co., Pennsylvania and her father's name was probably John Miller.
The marriage date of 1788 in Berks Co., Pennsylvania comes supposedly from John's application for his Rev. War pension, but I have not obtained a copy of this document. I have not found this date or the alternate date in 1786 in any of the primary sources that I have researched in Berks Co., Pennsylvania. Thus we can not say for sure when and where Eve and John were married.
Eve's date and location of death has also been reported with many variations by previous family historians. She could have died in on October 4, 1804, Indiana 1805 or in 1806. The location has been reported as Wythe Co., Virginia and Preble Co., OH. Michael Keesling of Culpepper, Virginia, who has done extensive research into the records in Wythe Co., Virginia has found no record of her death or burial there. Thus based on the birth dates and locations of her children and the record of her signing the sale record of part of Wilsher's Run in 1797, I theorize that she and John left Wythe Co., Virginia after this sale. They were in Rockingham Co., Virginia for the birth of Peter in 1800. They had moved on to what is now Preble Co., OH for the birth of Susanna in 1801 (reported as VA on the census - note: the area that they settled in later became Preble Co., OH and Wayne Co., Indiana). And were in this same area on what is now the border between Ohio and Indiana when George was born in February 1804. We have no indication that John and Eve were in Wythe Co., Virginia after 1797 and much oral family history to indicate that they were in what is now Preble Co., OH when she died. Thus I believe, but can't prove that she died in Preble Co., OH.
One family historian reported that according to oral family history Eve had a difficult child birth with George and never recovered, thus the death date of October 4, 1804. Most family historians report the date as 1805. Only one family historian reported 1806. All base their dates on oral family history. I have not located any records for burials in the State Line Cemetery and a search of the gravestones provide no clues. It should be noted that there are a number of gravestones located in the drainage ditch at the edge of the cemetery. Most are broken and many are made of the typical soft sandstone with unreadable inscriptions. Thus we do not know when she died, but I decided to record 1805 as the most probable based on the volume of oral family history to support this date.
NOTE: The State Line Cemetery is located on the west side of the road which now divides Ohio and Indiana on the Indiana side, but in 1804-1806 time period and when the dividing line between Ohio and Indiana was being contested this was in Ohio.
