Born in Liverpool England he migrated to America at age 12 with his parents, older sister Mary Ann and two younger brothers, William and Robert arriving in December 1801. His father, William Raper, died the night they landed near Richmond, Virginia. The rest of the family proceeded to Wythe County, VA as planned to help his maternal uncle, Thomas Jackson, work his lead mine.
In February 1808 he married Elizabeth "Betsy" Keesling. That same year they came overland to Indiana and settled in Boston Township, Wayne County where he entered 160 acres of land. He improved the land and became a prosperous farmer.
John Raper served in the War of 1812 in Capt. Farlow's Co. of Militia, 8 Regiment Indiana Territory between May 18 and July 18, 1813. He later served as Constable when the seat of justice was at Salisbury.
John and Elizabeth had 10 children: Ann, William, Robert, John, Eve, Mary, Susan, Thomas, George, and Hannah.
